Technical tree sampling and total harvest of Energy Crop Plantation Trial Site at Hacienda Providencia , San Carlos City, Neg.Occ.



  • Field Trialing and Assessing the Viability of Energy Crops for Use in Biomass Renewable Energy Projects in the Philippines” funded by the European Union  commenced in 2004 and aimed to assess the viability of establishing new sources of energy crop production on the island of Negros, Philippines for steam and power production.


  • ECP harvest at Providencia. After 14 years of growth, the site was totally cut back and information was archived for yield analysis over time such as yield determination of six Eucalyptus species, composite analysis and bulk density for five tree species (Bagalunga, Kupang, Robles, Fire Tree and Acacia).  Yield is dependent on many factors, including the site, water availability, planting density, light and temperature.


 Updating of knowledge and skills of nursery technical staff in areas of nursery management    practices and techniques in propagation is very essential for the project as well as the conduct of workshop for identifying the best practices and lessons learned on nursery for 2016 and 2017 batch seedlings propagation.

The Santa Cruz Ecotourism Development Project in Zambales Island

2017 to Present 

  • Conducted Needs Assessment for the island. Needs assessment that characterizes the resource base of the island’s proposed site for an   ecotourism development project.Pursuant to the Memorandum of Agreement, the assessment of GENESYS which commenced in February 2017 to November 2017 is geared towards the sustainable and ecological design and management of the natural resources of the island from different perspectives and consequently with different objectives.One of such perspectives focuses on the conservation of biodiversity and this includes on-ground assessment identifying the presence and extent of flora and fauna within the study area in the island to determine its ecological and biological importance.


  • Identification and validation and assessment of the 30 hectare forest. identified of standing trees inside the 30-hectare forest regrowth area, the grasses and plants that thrive perfectly in the coastline of the island and the project area during the months of May and September 2017 to enhance, manage and sustain the health condition of the Hermana Mayor Island’s forest health.  The researched data particularly on the number of species prevalent in the island aid the decision making process by enabling GENESYS to establish numerical benchmarks and guide to implement an eco-development strategy in the conservation of species.  This could either be by earth balling and transferring or collecting its seeds for mass propagation to increase its population.


  • Conducted a technical staff training on properly ball with high survival of trees instead of cutting as an environmental preservation initiative of the management.


  • Seedling nursery establishment for the project needs,  to include seed collection and  rearing of wildlings while continuing the efforts on tree identification and validation of  standing trees  from results of tree assessment by Dr. Armando Palijon, an expert in silviculture, arboriculture and urban forestry.

R & D of Crops for Biomass Supply


Most research studies have been showing that the sustainability of energy crops would be strongly linked to perennial species and several trials have investigated its potential. 

  • GENESYS put under trial among the bioenergy crops, the rearing of Arundo donax, a perennial grass, as an alternative to sugarcane trash and woody biomass to ensure stability of supply for power generation. A total of 1.77 hectares are used for the three trial sites at Panoolan in Barangay Guadalupe, San Carlos City and the Cities of La Carlota and Cadiz, all in Negros Occidental,  for the outgrowing of Arundo donax species.


  • R&D was also conducted to test the ideal levels of Osmocote fertilizer, coco peat and aged stock of peat moss for rearing Leucaena leucocephala var. K636 and Eucalyptus  camaldulensis . 


  • Total seedlings produced for R&D are 7,331 for Leucaena, 4,903 for Eucalyptus and 15,025 for Arundo donax which were either planted at the San Carlos Biopower Plant (SCBP) energy crop plantation (ECP) site or donated to upland farmers of San Carlos City, Negros Occidental  in  collaboration  with   the  San  Carlos Agriculture  and   City   Environment  Management Office.   The seedlings  are  for  use  in soil  erosion control, establishment of family wood lot areas and forage gardens for goat and cattle feeding.



1. - Tree balling was the best option than cutting trees here in Hermana Mayor Island . We tapped the expertise of  Dr. Palijon at Hermana Mayor in balling tress, he did a demo to transfer the technology to the company workers. 2.- The vision of the our organization to green the whole San Carlos  archipelago with trees by utilizing idle lands for Energy Crop Plantation was the best initiative. Also helping the farmers to maximize their  land income potential. 3.- Aside from planting trees , a biomass grass called " Arundo" or locally known as " tabunak " was also under research. A commercially size land were  planted with Arundo in three   ( 3) strategically  areas around  Negros namely  San Carlos Cit, La Carlota City and Cadiz City , all in Negros Occidental   to test the suitability of soil, and other environmental factors that can affect the growth of this grass.
